Santorini |
||
spectacular volcano island |
||
Santorini is one of the most spectacular and most visited island of the Cyclades. We were there many years ago for the first time and absolutely impressed of the landscape, the light and of course the caldera. At that time we stayed in Finikia, this time directly in Fira and so we had a fantastic view from the crater rim and in a few minutes we were in the nice but also very bustling tourist center. All people of the cruise ships push themselves during the day through the narrow streets. ( Click for large image !)

Not so bad is it in Ia , the popular town , which is more beautiful and also a little quiet. Here are the famous photogenic blue domed churches which have become the landmark of Santorini and may of course not missing on any photo. Who wants not to take only photos as souvenirs can also find everywhere in the streets small galleries, handicrafts and shops with island delicacies. |

The black, red and gray sandy and rocky beaches are mostly only accessible by steep steps and paths and are an interesting change to the bright beaches of the other islands of the Cyclades. The contrasts of the colors here are much more intense. But nobody come to Santorini because of the beaches. |

One of our sightseeing trip was the archaeological site of Agrotiri and we were very surprised how good and informative everything is shown. The city was buried by a volcanic eruption about 3500 years ago and partially excavated in the last years. |

A wonderful view over the whole island is from the monastery of Elijah on Mount Profitis. |
||
Our absolute highlight was the sunset from our hotel terrace and the evening stroll through the town, even if we had to climb the many steep steps up before. |

Santorini is a real must for every Cyclades lovers, even if all there is very touristy. We spent 3 days here and it was really beautiful and lovely. With our scooter we have explored the whole island. You can find much more pictures on our Photo Gallery. |
