On our 2nd journey
through the Isaan, we went by rental car from Phimai about Khorat to
Khon Kaen. The road goes almost straight from north to south.
Close to the towns and villages, hawker stalls offer home made
sausages. ( Click for large image !) Our first stop after 150 km was Phimai, known for its Khmer ruins from the 11th to 13 Century they belong to the most beautiful of Thailand. The area is not very big, and so we stayed here only for 2 hours. It was Saturday and therefore many Thai families were here, too, but it seemed that they are not so much interested on the ruins, than on us. We were the attraction for them. It was very funny.
We went on the 60 kilometres to Khorat, the "Gateway “to Isaan,
where we stayed 2 nights and met Werner and his wife. The city, with
its approximately 200.000 inhabitants, was just typical Isaan. We
strolled through the beautiful old town with the city moat, and the
great gates.
It was weekend and many Thais had the day off and what do they do,
eat! Everywhere, food stalls and big families made picnicking
in the middle of the city, it was a nice relaxed atmosphere, and we
enjoyed it very much.
Moreover there was a popular festival, too. The celebration in honour of Kuhn Ying Mo (Thai Suriname) she fighted against the Laotian invasion almost 200 years ago. This event runs 14 days every year. But without our two local people, Werner and Don, we had never seen it. It was really a great festival atmosphere, everywhere music, food stalls, handy craft shows, Thai boxing and so on. We enjoyed it very well.
Of course our 2 days here were too short, but our flight from
Bangkok to Krabi was booked and so we had to go on. On our way to
Bangkok we liked to visit one of the wineries in the Khao Yai
National Park. Our destination was to PB Winery. It was no problem
to find it, because Werner and Don drove ahead by their car.
