Islas Canarias
Lanzarote, is the most bizarre island of the Canaries
Archipelago and with its 835 square kilometres it is also the fourth largest and
northernmost island. We wanted to escape the grey and wet-cold spring in Germany
and booked a last minute trip. Of
course we had something heard about this island, but the reality surprised and
expected us. The treeless and meager volcanic landscape was a weird fascinating
attraction for us. You can think you are on the moon. The weather was not very fine this time. Deep clouds with rainstorms, cool wind changed with bright sunshine and blue sky. This was not good for us, but good for the flowers. The nature began to bloom an so it was a very nice contrast to the black earth and stones, green to black a wonderful colour scenery. |
Our Trip to the most important wine area round La Geria was very interesting. Here you can find a special cultivation of wine. The wine plants are placed in deep semicircular funnels from black volcanic ash. Of Course we visited one of the famous wineries and tasted the local wine. And it was very fine!

A trip to the northernmost lookout point and the Fire
Mountains belong to the touristic highlights.
From the Mirador del Rio you can have a spectacular view through the
“windscreen” the neighbouring island La Graciosa.

But the most attraction is the beautiful lava
landscape of the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya with its many colours. It is
really a wonderwork of nature with its own fascination. In a spectacular way the
Rangers demonstrated, that under our feet, the earth still bubbles. In a depth
of less than one metre, the temperature is 100 C - and at 10 metres it surpasses
the 400 C. Another Tourist attraction is the ride of a Dromedary. These desert
animals take you safe and swinging along the ways at the Fire Mountains. |
The
strong contrast to the black-red-brown stony landscape, are the bright white
shining beautiful long sandy beaches. The famous Papagayo beaches in the south
of the island belong to the youngest national park and there are fortunately no
big hotels and resorts allowed.

Lanzarote without Cesar Manrique is really impossible.
The former house of the artist was removed by him as museum. The Foundation
Cesar Manrique is an absolute must sight seeing for art-interested people.
He respected the style of the humans and nature, traditional architecture
and put it all in his modern stylist art. By our visit we were always fascinated of this kind of
building. 5 connected lava blisters represent the living areas and were used as living rooms, studio, sleeping room and atelier. Also the lava garden with the natural pool and his plants was extraordinary.

A
beautiful contrast to the lava landscape are the white houses with their green
painted windows and doors. In Haria, the valley of the thousands of palms, you
can see these cubic houses in a delightful environment. Round the village there
are more than 1000 date- palms, which are an attraction on this treeless island.

Our trip to the island capital Arrecife was not very interesting. The little sleepy, and provincial city has no great sightseeing points, expect the fishing port “Charco de San Gines “and some nice houses, balconies and a Castillo. The Spanish way of life we missed here a lot.
|
A
great nature event is at the southwest coast of the island at El Golfo. Here
break the very high Atlantic waves at the black volcanic coast, cliffs and
grottos

If you like this island with its singular moon
landscape ore not, a visit there is always a visit in the geologic history of
the earth. We think this is an absolute must for every people. During our 1 Week Holiday we get a good impression of the island
