Generally

The northeast of Thailand is well-known as Isaan. It is the largest of the 5 regions of Thailand and covers 17 provinces. The Isaan is geographically seen a high plateau bounded by mountain ranges in the north, of the Mekong river in the east and by Cambodia in the south. The climate is in the summers very hot and dry and in the cold season it becomes sometimes very cool. The area is most agricultural, characteristic is the cultivation of rice, but also fishing on the Mekong River. Neglected of the government, the region was long time the poorhouse of Thailand. Now in this time the Isaan become a meaning as passage gate to the neighbour countries like Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, which were locked for a long time under communist rule.
The inhabitants speak a kind of Lao Thai and their culture is the culture of the Khmer, which you can see by many architectural monuments.
In addition there are here a number of important bronze-temporal places and for Thailand unusually, very nice cave paintings and as well large and fantastic national parks where you can walk without any problems.
